cairo diaries

i just came back from cairo where i was grateful to spend quality time with my father's side of the family. i got to meet up with some relatives i never really got the chance to talk to much when i was younger. my father's cousin sat me down and gave me the low down on my father's father's ancestry. turns out my father is mainly turkish and only partly egyptian through his mom and of course by default of growing up there. it doesn't make much of a difference in my life, but hearing about his great grandmother's journey to egypt from turkey was fascinating and one of the most interesting stories i've heard in a while. definitely script worthy. some day....

every time i go to egypt i get overwhelmed by the same feelings of nostalgia, happiness and disappointment. i'll always remember visiting more regularly when i was younger, spending weeks learning more about cairo as well as spending time with the whole family by the sea. i'm not only happy to be around family, but happy to explore the vast history which leads me to disappointment when i see the living situation that people have to endure as well as the insurmountable problems constantly on the rise. unfortunately, most of the time these problems do not find a solution.

egypt is so organized in its disorganization; the streets are a perfect example of this. i get anxiety attacks every time i'm in a car because i'm almost certain i'm about to die or someone else is. at one point, we had to rush my grandmother to the hospital and the amount of time it took us was disturbing. of course you're more aware of every detail and second wasted when someone's life is on the line - cars just randomly decide to stop halfway through a roundabout, people find that catching up in the middle of the street is normal and the traffic is always jammed. immense frustration is an understatement. we're grateful we got her to the hospital and everything turned out alright, but i have heard a lot of freak stories of people not making it to the hospital on time because of the road situation.

the photo above strangely enough depicts how i would describe egypt right now. figuratively, it's not in good shape, but there is hope, and literally, one of the few visual attributes that saves some areas is the greenery. i don't see myself ever living there, but it is a place i truly wish will improve.

a pirates life is a life for me

a little peak into an adventure i took off the coastline of oman to musandam, which juts out into the strait of hormuz at the entrance to the persian gulf. it turned out to be such a memorable trip that definitely beat the monotonous set of weekends i'd been enduring in dubai. you know, the ones that really challenge your alcohol tolerance in a club with a burnt out excitement fuse and misleading social skills. the only con to such a fun weekend is the need to continuously match the excitement of each ensuing weekend to it. enjoy the photo timeline below:
we faced some angry waters, but luckily i kept everything under control.
the necessary map for treasure.
the necessary plank for the disobedient.
meet dinghy. he likes to hang out.

we had to fit through that gap, it was an extremely frightful moment. i wish.
i love these frisky free spirits.
mermaid lagoon. we stayed clear of the commoners.
the water was so inviting i didn't want to get out. nothing beat swimming at night though, with all the phytoplankton. i'll never got bored of those little ravers.
i'm glad i brought my snorkeling gear, that one school of fish was really interesting... not. it's actually amusing to notice how none of the fish are ballsy enough to make their own way. i noticed one try hesitantly, and return. i'm sure it regrets it every minute of its life.
a fruity concoction made with love - not for those with low tolerance i.e. myself.
i cannot begin to explain how perfect this moment was.
what? we just happened to be hanging out up there...
spending some time on land. i must say i'm proud of my photo taking skills. yes fine, and lightroom has great presets blah blah blah.
we did some rock climbing and apparently i meditated (not true) before the ghost of a mountain goat shooed us away. so we settled for a fire and chicken, which was delicious!

the experience at night was unmatched by any other out in nature, for me personally. unfortunately no camera would capture the moment perfectly, but hopefully you have a vivid imagination: pitch black, the sky full of shimmering stars, the moon lighting up the silhouette of the mountains, a beautiful breeze, and four dolphins keeping up with the moving boat by the bow OUTLINED by the glow emitted by all the phytoplankton. i might have shed a tear now that i think about it. wait, yes i did. i didn't want the moment to ever end; i was actually a walking book of cliches. it was like every beautiful feeling in one moment. don't even get me started on the withdrawals.

i highly recommend taking this adventure to musandam before the heat tsunami really strikes.

♥ the farmers market

i love the famers market. shame i haven't come across one here. i'm sure i just haven't discovered it yet. could be in deira, in which case i'll never go. this stand in san fran had some of the most delicious treats. when it comes to dessert, i prefer gluten-free/vegan. just because i like complicating life like that.
practically calling my name
honestly i couldn't ask for more. not the intense sweetness of the usual cupcake, just the perfect, cream-filled, moist, fluffy treat. (i actually had to rephrase that sentence a couple times... #infiltrationofthedirtymind)

i'm finally grateful, again.

"What lights you up today?" I finally dragged my brother, sister-in-law and one of my best friends, Grace, visiting from Boston, to Cafe Gratitude in the Mission where you're always welcomed with a question. For those of you who don't know, it's one of my favorite vegan restaurants in San Fran and I feel oh so whole and content after eating there (thanks to my girl Razane).

I'd never be able to be a vegan, but I have to say if I had these meals cooked for me, it wouldn't be that hard.

Mmm.. no I take that back, I love meat and froyo way too much.

Since I've eaten there and know how good the food is, I always seem to forget the usual misconception of vegan food being bland, boring, and scary. I had to do a bit of convincing to Grace. I think people should always be up for experimenting; spontaneity tells you a lot about how exciting they are in... life. N'est-ce pas?

We decided to only order four dishes rather than go too wild (FINE, I was told to only order four); but I'm glad they controlled me. After the meal I made sure we got dessert and you know when you keep eating because it's in front of you? You convince yourself you're only taking small bites, you know, just skimming off the top- but then end up eating more than half. That's basically what happened to me, and lets just say that I was actually about to cry when we left. We had to walk around to help me digest, because if I got in the car I would have gotten sick instantly. It's so like me to overdo something until I can't stand it anymore. I feel better now though... wouldn't mind another round or two :)
I am Whole is my favorite dish (bottom left): sea vegetables and kale, steamed quinoa, house made kim chee, carrots and sprouts with tahini-garlic sauce and teriyaki almonds. YUMMAY.
This was the runner up, I am Hearty: deep-dish pizza with sun-dried tomato marinara, pesto, olive tapenade, Brazil nut Parmesan and cashew ricotta cheese on live onion sunflower pizza crust. Cmon.. you're getting interested.
I wasn't wild about the desserts. We got a coconut mousse and a pecan and chai cheesecake. I can't think of it cuz the thought will get me full again. I think if I were to get a dessert I'd get their smoothie I am Grace. It's de-lish!
I even bought their recipe book yaay! Knowing me I won't make anything in there, but I'm still excited! I don't even think you can find kale in Dubai ugh... #firstworldproblems

So yeah, anyone visiting this side of things, make a stop at Cafe Gratitude for a yummy experience and to learn a whole new perspective on vegan food.

Want to Educate Yourself?

For a lot of us, we wish we paid more attention in school, for some reason NOW we're much more interested in scooping as much education as we can into our brains. If you are one of these people who wants to give themselves that second go at learning everything from "arithmetic to physics, finance, and history" check out Khan Academy. You can learn everything you want at your own pace. Oh yeah, and it's free!
Since I'm on the topic of learning at our own pace, I have to recommend Lynda.com to those of you who aren't familiar. I spend hours on this site, mainly on Photoshop and Lightroom tutorials. This one isn't free, but it's perfect and will teach you everything about any software in detail. I prefer taking these online tutorials rather than courses because you can always take note of the videos and return to them whenever you need a recap.

MUST TRY: Some Saturday Nasimi Beaching

Last Saturday I was really shocked/happy/scared to jinx it/excited that that I could spend a very relaxing day at Atlantis, Nasimi Beach on bean bags or lounge chairs for free! It's a sweet deal, especially since they offer the towels and ice lollies to cool you down (not that you'd need them in this perfect weather).

With good music, yummy food a menu away, and a sleaze free atmosphere, it's definitely something to check out. As much as I miss the snowflakes, I'm pretty ecstatic about being able to top up on my tan in December (naturally).

Happy Monday! xx

Fun in the Sun at Aquaventure

Last weekend I finally went to Aquaventure in Atlantis and it was sooooooooo much fun! It felt like being on vaca, even though I could see my apt building from the beach... There were loads of tourists, the sun was out but there was a nice breeze, the slides were fun, and the fruit was fresh! I do think that if I go again I won't go at 1pm but rather at 11am to catch a nice tan. Other than the annoying wait for the different slides, it was such a fun day. You know, the leap of faith isn't as scary as I thought it would be. I guess I didn't have much time to analyze what I was getting myself into, but for some reason my back didn't enjoy it. Note to all of you who decide to try it, hold your nose tightly shut. It felt like a hose was placed right under my nostrils, and turned on suddenly to the highest pressure. I didn't appreciate the lack of warning...
Where all the kiddies play and the water is 99% pee!
I took this photo during broad daylight but it came out with such a different mood. I don't feel like it was taken in Dubai when I look at it.
We got the fruit combo and the coconut water tasted great! I lie... but at least it's healthy and I was thirsty, so it really did the job.
I love pineapple so much. This one was so sweet, we scraped the inside until there was nothing else to eat, proper villager style. It looked super awkward at the end though because there was just this stick protruding from the middle. Yeah... you would have thought it too.

The watermelon wasn't even red and yet was so sweet.
A beautiful sunset to end the day.

If you do go, remember to bring your Emirates License or ID because rather than paying AED 200 you'll pay AED 140 (they don't advertise that anywhere of course). The photos are ridiculously expensive, priced at AED 150, and the key chain they give is butterz; it's purple with glitter- something you'd find at the Limited II. Don't take photos in the pool with the slide behind you unless you want to experience the most awkward poses with whoever you're with. I don't know if the photographer was bored or genuinely thought he was brought over to take photographs for a soft porn magazine. Either way, very bizarre.

If you haven't been, make some time for it. We should all feel like kids every once in a while!

Napa Napa Napa

Missing my trip to Napa Valley in June. Not only was it one of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen, the food was spectacular and the wine hit the spot. I still stick to my favorite wines, red Zinfandel, and white Reisling (from Germany). Here are a few photos from the trip. Can't wait for my next wine tasting excursion!

My very own winery (I wish)

barcode yourself - find out how much you're really worth

Making fun of the world of consumerism we live in, barcode yourself, gives you the chance to find out how much you cost based on your gender, location, age, weight and height using "real world data" (not sure how that works).

According to the site the calculation of "an individual's BMI based on the height and weight reveals the health of an individual, thus those considered underweight or overweight are worth less money. In addition, in comment to the dominance of the United States, all barcodes are published in inches and pounds. A female barcode takes the real-world hit of earning 72 cents less than each dollar earned by a man. The average for age takes on the most comic tone, borrowing from the worlds' most famous 33-year old, Jesus."

I came out to a measly $3.49, i really hoped i'd be worth more....
